WEEK12 WANGYIZHE Wikipedia Article Development: From Reader to Contributor
Before taking this class, I thought Wikipedia articles were written only by experts or professional editors. However, after actually editing and developing an article myself, I realized that Wikipedia is built through collaboration and continuous improvement from ordinary users around the world. This week’s activity focused on article development, and I learned how difficult it is to create a reliable and well-structured article.
The most challenging part for me was finding reliable sources. Wikipedia requires verifiable information, which means personal opinions or unconfirmed content cannot be added. I had to search for academic articles, news reports, and trustworthy websites to support every statement. This process made me realize how important source credibility is in digital knowledge production.
Another thing I learned was the importance of neutrality. While editing, I sometimes wanted to write my own interpretation or make the article more interesting, but Wikipedia’s policies emphasize a neutral point of view. Because of this, I had to carefully adjust my writing style to sound objective and balanced.
Overall, this week changed the way I view Wikipedia. I used to think editing was simple, but now I understand the effort required to maintain high-quality information. Developing an article gave me a deeper appreciation for collaborative knowledge and online communities.
