Week12-Understanding Wikipedia Advanced editing or how to write high quality conten—JIN CHUYUE

1. Summary

This week’s class was about advanced Wikipedia editing and how to write good, high-quality articles. We learned the main rules: using reliable sources, keeping a neutral tone, and organizing the content clearly. The lesson also explained how to request peer reviews to get feedback and improve our work. All these rules are there to keep Wikipedia’s information accurate and trustworthy.

2. Interesting Learning Point

The most surprising thing for me was realizing what makes an article “high quality.” I always thought adding more facts was enough, but it turns out citing sources correctly, writing in a neutral way, and having a clear structure are just as important. I also didn’t know you could ask for an assessment to get feedback on your work. It feels really helpful for new editors like me.

3. Question for Discussion

I’m still confused about how to keep up with these high standards when I want to contribute quickly. When I edit a topic I care about, I get excited to add information right away, but I’m scared I’ll mess up the citations or sound biased. I wonder if there are simple checklists or tools that can help new editors follow these rules without feeling overwhelmed.

Comments

  1. Your Section 3 concern is really relatable — I felt the same way when I first started editing.

From what I've seen, Wikipedia actually does have some built-in tools for this. The "Article development" page we read this week lists quality criteria pretty explicitly by stage (Stub → Start → B-class, etc.), so it can work as a rough checklist. There's also the Talk page of most articles where other editors sometimes leave specific feedback, which helps you figure out what's missing before you even submit for a formal review.

One thing that helped me was thinking of citations as you go rather than at the end — it's much less overwhelming than trying to source everything after writing.
