W2.1 March 9 – Reaing notes-GUO YING
1) Summary of the reading
The reading discusses Wikipedia as a collaborative platform where knowledge is continuously created and revised by users rather than controlled by a single authority. It emphasizes that Wikipedia functions through collective participation, where contributors edit, discuss, and refine content over time. Instead of presenting knowledge as fixed, the platform treats it as something dynamic and open to improvement. This system relies on shared guidelines and community consensus to maintain structure while still allowing flexibility.
2) New or interesting points
One interesting idea is that Wikipedia’s strength comes from its openness, but this same openness can also create uncertainty about accuracy. The reading highlights that articles are always “unfinished,” meaning they can be updated at any time as new information appears. I also found it interesting that collaboration among anonymous users can still produce relatively reliable knowledge, even without a central editor controlling everything. It shows how online communities can self-organize through norms rather than formal authority.
3) Questions / discussion points
I wonder how Wikipedia ensures long-term accuracy when information is constantly changing. Are there specific mechanisms that help prevent repeated misinformation from staying on pages too long? I am also curious about how editors decide which sources are strong enough to be included, especially when different websites may present conflicting information.
